Free Things to Do in La Fortuna: Experience Arenal for $0
Enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica without spending a fortune.
While La Fortuna is known for its world-class (and sometimes expensive) tours, you don't need a huge budget to have an amazing time. There are several **hidden gems** and local spots that are completely free.
1. El Salto (Rope Swing)
Located just a short walk from town (on the bridge towards the waterfall), El Salto is a local swimming hole on the Fortuna River. It features a famous rope swing where you can jump into the refreshing turquoise water.
It is a great place to meet other travelers and locals. There are no entrance fees, but be careful as the rocks can be very slippery.
2. El Chollín (Free Hot Springs)
Why pay $80 for a resort when you can get the same volcanic water for free? El Chollín is the public part of the Tabacon River. It is naturally heated by the volcano and features small rapids and warm pools.
3. Scenic Views from Route 142
You don't always need to pay for a hiking trail to see the volcano. Driving along Route 142 (towards the lake) offers some of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of the Arenal cone. There are several safe spots to pull over and take photos.
