Stretching over 30 kilometers at the base of the Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal is not just a place for photos—it is an engineering marvel and a sanctuary for wildlife. Originally a small natural lagoon, it was expanded in 1979 to create Costa Rica's largest hydroelectric project, which today provides a huge part of the country's electricity.

The Sunken Towns: A Piece of History

Did you know there are two towns at the bottom of the lake? When the dam was built, the old towns of Arenal and Tronadora were intentionally flooded. Today, a new Arenal town exists on the shore, but local legends say that during extreme droughts, you can almost see the top of the old church tower beneath the blue water.

1. Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddle (SUP)

Paddling on Lake Arenal is the best way to get close to the volcano's lava walls from a safe distance. The water is calmest in the **early morning**, making it perfect for beginners and birdwatchers who want to spot Ospreys and Kingfishers.

Pro Tip: Most kayak tours depart from the "Dam" (Represa) area. This spot offers the most iconic view of the volcano cone reflecting on the water.

2. Rainbow Bass Fishing

Anglers from around the world come here to catch the Guapote (Rainbow Bass). These fish are famous for their beautiful colors and their aggressive fight. Since the lake is deep, hiring a local boat with a fish-finder is highly recommended.
