Best Time to Visit La Fortuna & Arenal
Your month-by-month guide to sunshine, rain, and crowds.
The question is always the same: When is it going to rain? In La Fortuna, the weather is governed by the volcano's microclimate. Here is everything you need to know about the dry season, the green season, and those "secret" weeks of sunshine in between.
Dry Season (December - April)
This is "summer" in Costa Rica. You can expect clear blue skies and the highest probability of seeing the volcano cone without a single cloud.
- Pros: Ideal for hiking, photography, and outdoor tours.
- Cons: Highest prices for lodging and very crowded parks.
Green Season (May - November)
The rainforest comes alive! Everything is incredibly green and lush. While it rains, it usually does so in short tropical bursts in the afternoon, leaving the mornings clear for adventure.
The "Little Summer" (July)
In Costa Rica, we have a phenomenon called "Veranillo de San Juan." During July, the rains often stop for 2 or 3 weeks, creating a "mini-summer" in the middle of the rainy season. This is a secret best time to visit if you want lower prices and good weather!
Average Monthly Conditions
| Months | Visibility | Crowds |

💡 Pro Tip for Volcano Visibility:
The Arenal Volcano is "shy." Wake up at 6:00 AM. This is when the air is coolest and the clouds haven't formed yet around the peak. By 10:00 AM, it's often covered.
